Demon's Boon

Demon’s Boon: Kazopolis on a Mono Demon Script #

The obvious problem with mono demon Kazopolis is that the demon is the only player who doesn’t get to pick their character. Some demons (like Lil Monsta) can side step this issue by letting the demon pick their minion role, but that’s not an option for most demons.

The simplest option is to let the evil team decide who wants to be the demon, but that option is a bit clunky, and can put the storyteller in an awkward spot if no one is willing to be the demon. I’ve been thinking about this problem as long as I’ve been running Kazopolis, and I finally found a solution I’m happy with.

The point of Kazopolis is to let people pick the game they want to play, if the demon can’t pick their character, then the solution is to give them a different choice, an exciting choice that could even be more exciting than picking a character.

Demon’s Boon: During character selection, the Demon may not pick a new character. Instead, the demon gains and uses a special ability. All players know what it is. #

Instead of picking a character, the demon gets a special power and gets to make a decision in secret that impacts the rest of the game. What this special ability is should be a decision made be the script writer, but if you are converting an existing script to the Kazopolis format, then the storyteller will need to come up with a demon’s boon prior to handing out tokens.

Below are some examples of Demon’s boons that could be used on a mono demon script.

  • The demon has a townsfolk ability of their choice in addition to their own. The storyteller may prompt them to pick again.
  • The demon chooses a character, all copies of that character are made Kazopolis drunk, even if they are unique.
  • The demon chooses a non-demon player, they can’t die during the day.
  • The demon chooses two good characters, all players learn which. No one can become that character for the rest of the game, picking characters again if necessary.
  • The storyteller has a minion ability of the demon’s choice. The storyteller may prompt them to pick again.
  • The demon chooses a player. Once per game, their ability may malfunction.
  • The demon chooses a player, they learn this. If more than 5 players live, they must vote on every nomination.
  • The demon chooses a player. The first time the demon fails to kill a player, that player dies instead.
  • The demon chooses which players are Minions [No Minions in the Bag].
  • The demon chooses which players are Outsiders, the Storyteller chooses how many [No Outsiders in the Bag].
  • The demon may make a wish. If granted, it may have a cost and leave a clue to its nature.
  • The demon may choose for executions to require 1 less or 1 more vote than normal. The choice is not announced.
  • The demon has an additional ongoing ability but does not know what their ability is. Each day, they may privately guess what it is and they learn how accurate they are.
  • The demon may choose to become the Atheist instead of the demon. If they remain the demon, the storyteller chooses which players become minions [No Minions in the Bag].
